Sure, They're Smiling Now

But that's because they don't yet realize what they've gotten themselves into, or what a serious endeavor it is to play for the Pen & Pencil Club softball team.
The unsuspecting young man is Keith Craig (although I would not state with any certainty that I'm positive it isn't actually Craig Keith). Keith -- or whatever -- is a writer at Philadelphia Media Network, producing advertorial copy that will help make us a lot of money and keep us from firing him (this week).
Keith and Dan Rubin became friends because they work out at the same gym and Keith said he was looking for a softball team. Dan said he didn't know of any, but the Pen & Pencil might be a good substitute. Keith played baseball in college and only recently gave up hardball in the Chester/Delco men's league, so we'll give him a chance.
I know, I know. I know what you're saying: "Rubin works out?" Yeah, coulda knocked me over with a feather, too. Anyway, join me in welcoming Keith or Craig. He will wear No. 5.
Also new to us this season, is Liz Gabor, who got off to a great P&P start by showing up after practice was over, donning the uniform and cracking open a beer. That's pretty much hitting for the cycle with our team.
Liz works at PIDC, plays in about five soccer leagues and promises to be more punctual once the season begins. She will wear No. 10, like all great soccer players.
Ah, yes, the season. It begins Mon. April 16, although we don't know where or against whom. That's because commissioner Ed "Edventure" Wagner doesn't have a schedule yet. That's because we don't have all the field permits yet. That's because -- while I was out of town -- we voted to add two new teams to the league so that half the Franklin team could put together an all-star team and the other half could find a place for Buddy to play.
Anyway, I'm sure there will be a season and I'm reasonably certain it will begin April 16. I am also dead sure whatever Ed comes up with will annoy the fuck out of me. And don't get me started on how the league was split into two divisions.
In other news, we are scheduled for a friendly against the former Valanni Swallows on Sat. April 21, 3 p.m. at Edgeley 8. The Swallows are now FourPlay (or 4Play, I'm not sure). I don't ask too many questions.
Get your running in.
